Ever wondered what an outfield camp experience is like? Fall in at "A Taste of Outfield Camp: Heritage in a Mess Tin", part of the myriad programmes you can experience at Singapore HeritageFest (SHF) 2024. It's the perfect opportunity for you and your loved ones to "camo on", set up your own basha (tarp) tent, and try the makan aka MREs (Meal, Ready-to-eat), which our soldiers consume while they're outfield.

After that, gear up for a "route march" to SAFTI Military Institute, where you’ll uncover the rich traditions and heritage of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), from the iconic passing out parade to the climb up the prominent SAFTI Tower.

And psst... there will be a culinary superstar on site to elevate your classic mess-tin meals into mouth-watering dishes. Catch TikTok-famous mess-tin chef and ex-SAF Ranger Aziz Shafii, who's known for starting his TikTok clips with the witty catchphrase, "Ranger eats what ah?"

Last June, we spoke to Aziz (@rangereats on TikTok), who served 16 years in the SAF before leaving in Feb 2023. He is now an Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) instructor. Fun fact: The idea to create tasty mess-tin meals originated while training with his men in the jungles of Brunei.

The 39-year-old was even considered for a spot on "MasterChef Singapore" Season 4, and made it to the second round of auditions. However, he had to decline the opportunity due to scheduling conflicts.

Singapore HeritageFest 2024

Launched in 2004, Singapore HeritageFest (SHF) is an annual event that showcases our country’s rich history, culture, and heritage. Expect guided tours, interactive exhibitions, and immersive performances that bring Singapore’s vibrant neighbourhoods, traditional dishes, and unique customs to life. Previous editions of SHF have spotlighted Singapore's ASEAN connections, hidden gems around the city, and the country’s diverse ethnic groups.

This year marks the 21st edition of SHF, coinciding with 35 years of Singapore's conservation programme and 40 years of Total Defence. SHF 2024 puts the spotlight on Singapore's built heritage, diving into the stories behind the buildings and sites constructed during colonial times and those shaping the city today.
