Games In August: Go On A Cat-venture, Battle Gundam Robots, And Become A Star Wars Outlaw
Gaming is now officially an Olympic sport. The first official Olympic Esports Games, organised by the International Olympic Committee, will be held in Saudi Arabia next year. The actual titles that will be played have not been announced, but you can now tell your parents or bae that your gaming sessions are part of "training for the Olympics."
And hey, Singapore's 59th birthday is just around the corner! As we dive deeper into the third quarter of the year, let’s talk about new games that you can binge on during the long National Day weekend. Here are our top picks for August 2024:
World of Goo 2
PC, Nintendo Switch
Release date: 2 August
The classic puzzle game is back after 16 years! As with the original title, you use Goo Balls to create bridges and other structures to get over chasms, cliffs, spikes, and many other obstacles. The challenge is using as few Goo Balls as possible to beat the level.
Cat Quest III
PC, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One, S|X, Nintendo Switch
Release date: 8 August
Singapore developer The Gentlebros will be releasing their latest instalment in the award-winning Cat Quest series. Set sail in the Purribean, engaging in ship vs ship battles, and hunting for treasures like weapons, spells, and costumes. Traverse the world any way you like, help those in need or sail to the world's end. Plus, there’s local co-op, so you can bring your first mate along for the adventure – and it releases just in time for National Day!
Black Myth Wukong

Release date: 20 August
This game offers a fresh twist on Journey To The West. Play as the Destined One (Sun Wukong), wielding the legendary staff to defeat enemies. You can also transform into your enemies, using their weapons and their attacks.
Gundam Breaker 4
PC, PlayStation 4|5, Nintendo Switch
Release date: 25 August
A robot fan’s dream game. Build and customise the ultimate Gundam plastic model kit (or Gunpla). You battle other Gundam robots to break off their parts and add them to your collection. There are 250 base kits to choose from, and you can fully paint your model, add weathering effects, and even apply decals to make your perfect Gundam.
Visions of Mana
PC, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox Series S|X
Release date: 29 August
After the massive release of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Square Enix is reviving another JRPG classic franchise in the Mana series. Journey through the semi-open world as Val and his childhood friend Hinna, as they travel to the Tree of Mana. Each character has distinct class options that evolve based on your playstyle. Val starts with a great sword, but can switch to the Aegis class, wielding a spear and shield for a defensive approach.
Star Wars Outlaws
PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X
Release date: 30 August
The Star Wars universe is teeming with iconic characters, but the outlaws like Han Solo and Boba Fett truly stand out. In this open-world action-adventure, you can join the galaxy’s most wanted.
