Off-The-Beaten-Track Mother's Day Workshop Gifts

Think of Mother’s Day gifts, and the usual high teas, brunches, lunches, spas, flowers, cakes and jewellery come to mind, because that’s what everyone does! But trust me, even with the best of intentions, doing the same thing every year gets a little boring and clichéd for mums.

So what if you took the road less travelled and spoiled Mum with something special that you both could enjoy together? We’re talking about some really cool workshop gift ideas where you can really spend quality time together and have a unique and personalised memento to remember the special day for years to come.

Check out these cool Mother’s Day workshop ideas:

Make soy candles with essential oils

Sign up for this 3hr Mother’s Day Workshop with To Be Calm (excluding 45 minutes of waiting time for the candles to set) to create your own Soy Wax Fragrant Candle.

And to sweeten the deal, the Workshop ($65 per person) also includes a complimentary Essential Oil Rollerball class for every participant, to create their own unique 10ml Essential Oil Rollerball.

Note: Also included are light refreshments catered by The Providore and a 10% storewide coupon from The Providore (valid for the same day of the workshop).

Can’t make it on the 12th of May? You can always sign up for a private group workshop at To Be Calm on a different day, provided that there are enough participants to fill up the time slot.

Upcycle ceramics in a Kintsugi workshop

Much like what happens in life and motherhood, the ancient Japanese healing art of Kintsugi teaches you how to embrace the imperfections in your life, serving as a reminder to stay optimistic when life seems less than perfect and things fall apart. Literally.

This 2.5hr workshop on Kintsugi (from $135 per person) teaches participants the art of resilience and the philosophy behind this belief, repairing broken pottery using powdered gold to create a beautiful new piece of mosaic art. And you even get to select and break the ceramic piece of your choice.

My two cents worth: as a mum myself, I think this makes for a very touching ode to motherhood and Mother’s Day.

Note: All art materials provided in the workshop, as well as Japanese Green Tea and snacks.

Go to a Wheel Throwing-Experiential Pottery Class

Move over painting and cooking classes! Get your hands dirty now with this creative ceramic-shaping workshop using clay.

Simply put, wheel-throwing is the name of the process that begins once clay touches an electric wheel, to the moment the wheel stops.

This 2.5-hour class from 3Arts is suitable for everyone from 12 years & above with little or no pottery experience, making it a great option for a mommy & me Mother’s Day gift idea ($83.20 per person).

Everything you need is provided, including materials, tools, firing and your choice of colour for glazing in one colour. Please note that the handmade pieces (the first piece is included, and all extra pieces are charged at $10 each) will be available for collection only 8 weeks later, as they require glazing with colour and 2 rounds of firing.

And don’t miss the wheel-throwing demonstration provided at the beginning of the session just before the workshop begins for important tips!

Note: Book here for the best price possible and to enjoy 10% off your first 2 bookings.

Make organic rose-shaped soaps

If mum loves scented soaps, roses, everything Korean and is someone who finds repetitive actions calming and therapeutic, then this 1-hour rose flower soap making workshop ($60) is for her.

Hosted by Unmi, Singapore's only certified Korean soap artisan and qualified soap making instructor, all the ingredients needed for these handcrafted soaps are brought straight from Korea, as Unmi teaches how to bond each rose petal, one by one, to create a rose pattern by piecing together each petal.

Note: the workshop also includes tea and snacks.

Make customised perfume

You might think that Innerfyre was all about the best, clean-burning, scented candles in Singapore (one of my most favourite candles), thanks to their luxurious blends of virgin coconut wax and rice bran wax. But you would be mistaken.

Innerfyre is just as popular for its essential oil-based perfumes, blending jojoba oil with exquisite scents for unique aromatic profiles, bringing a touch of wanderlust into your day.

This Mother’s Day, gift this beautiful perfume-making workshop ($89) to a special lady in your life, for her to go on a journey of self-discovery to create a signature fragrance that truly represents her unique personality and style; a fragrance that is uniquely her. Whether you prefer floral, woody, or oriental scents, Innerfyre perfumes has her covered.

The workshop also includes learning about the history of art, as well as a wide variety of high-quality 100% pure essential oils to craft your own personalised scent blend.

Handcraft your own jewellery

Anyone can buy a piece of jewellery but what about making a unique piece of jewellery for mom to celebrate her unique, creative style?

Choose between the Basic Silversmithing Workshop to create your own silver jewellery or the Basic Jewellery Casting Workshop for melting pewter into something new, hosted by self-taught metalsmith Johnne Lee, founder of Imperial Smithster.

The Silversmithing workshop teaches participants how to make rings, pendants or anything else you fancy of their own design in sterling silver; while the Jewellery Casting workshop has Johnne keeping the dying art and technique of lost wax casting alive, as he teaches you how to turn anything into jewellery. Go from a carved wax model to a piece of pewter product in hours. You'll also get to know the different metals used for jewellery making and get hands-on experience melting and pouring pewter.

Both workshops are 3 hours each and cost $100 per person.
