Whether she’s a fun-loving creative, a traditionalist, or a hip, happening girl-about-town, there’s a Mother’s Day (9 May) treat just waiting for the number one woman in your life. We’ve waded through the numerous options and short-listed a few so you can begin making your reservations now.
For: The hands-on mum
Mums with young children might appreciate a fun-filled bonding session over chocolate cake, sugar flowers and frosting. Everything from dark chocolate ganache, a chocolate tag that says “Happy Mother’s Day”, sprinkles and piping bags of pink and blue buttercream are neatly provided for. All that’s left to do when Mum receives it is gather around the table with her little ones and have fun decorating the confection. The Mother’s Day menu at this Muslim-owned restaurant along Amoy Street features delights like cod en papillote, which sees a cod fillet blanketed with fennel, seasonal greens, herbs and a soy broth and baked in a paper package till tender and succulent. Mums also get a sweet treat of Pearl of Earl Grey, comprising melon ganache topped with a cheese mousse, Sakura and earl grey pearls. A non-dairy option is also available. Much of the stars of Singapore’s local food culture are on the Halal-certified buffet spread at popular establishment. The Mother’s Day special includes scrumptious offerings like braised seafood clay pot with abalone, sea cucumber, dried scallops and tiger prawns, Australian lamb vindaloo, braised crab meat glass noodles, and sweets such as durian fritters, sago gula melaka and milo ice cream.
For: The wagyu-loving mum
At this Japanese steak specialist, the Mother’s Day meal is a true feast that begins with three appetisers – chawanmushi, assorted sashimi and miso soup. What follows is a main course comprising four items: Miyazaki wagyu steak served with fresh wasabi and fried shallots; a premium salad of asparagus, carrots, broccoli, shimeiji and shitake mushrooms, and Chinese cabbage; tempura moriwase; and the restaurant’s signature Fat Rice featuring high-quality Japanese rice cooked in wagyu fat before it is mixed with dried kelp and truffle oil. This indulgent experience culminates with a burnt Basque cheesecake and seasonal sorbet. It’s rather a steal at $99 per person, if you ask us.
For: The mum who’s a Channel 8 fan
To celebrate both Mother’s and Father’s Day, this stalwart restaurant has teamed up with actor-turned-chef Li Nan Xing to offer a limited-edition rendition of its signature white bee hoon. Available till 26 July, the dried scallop hae bee hiam XO bee hoon is available along with a range of teas made by actress Vivian Lai’s tea brand, Teabrary. Beyond the limited-edition white bee hoon are new sides like homemade tofu with dried scallops, hae bee hiam and minced pork, and stir-fried prawns with dried scallop hae bee hiam. It’ll be a homespun, umami-laden meal for sure!
For: The mum with a voracious appetite
This well-loved buffet commemorates Mother’s Day throughout the weekend of 7 May, with a spread that’ll please mums with even the fussiest palates. There’s everything from freshly shucked Canadian oysters, superior double-boiled soup with Chinese yam, vegan chicken salads, and desserts galore.
