60 Awesome Things That Made It Into The Singapore Book Of Records
Singapore has topped many a global ranking – world's best airport, world's most powerful passport, and, groan, world's most expensive city to live in – but here in the Lion City, there've been more than a few quirky records that have been broken on a national level.
To celebrate Singapore's 60th birthday, we spotlight 60 cool, chuckle-worthy, and random that have made it into the Singapore Book of Records – all awesome, all worth celebrating.
Community
1. 3 August 2014: Longest line of people walking with the national flag
349 Sembawang residents gathered at Block 786B Woodlands Drive 60 on the morning of 3 August 2014 for a short walk around the neighbourhood – carrying national flags tied together in a continuous chain.
Aside from the standard large-sized flags, several of the participants were also carrying smaller flags and conveying their enthusiasm by sounding clappers and whistles.
2. 23 July 2017: Largest display of handpainted Singa figurines
Braddell Heights CC bought several of the white SG50 Singa figurines that were distributed at NDP 2015. Over the course of several months, residents and community partners came together to colour, paint and personalise these figurines.
1965 of the hand-painted figurines were displayed at the CC's National Day light-up event on 23 July 2017.
3. 8 August 2017: Most number of people signing the national pledge simultaneously
To better understand hearing-impaired people and create a more inclusive environment, Radin Mas Primary School students spent several weeks learning basic sign language.
On 8 August 2017, before the school's National Day celebrations, 1,458 pupils recited the Singapore pledge together via hand signing.
4. 10 September 2022: Largest elderly group performing ukulele together
Many senior citizens have learned to play the ukulele through En Community Services Society. On 10 September 2022, 204 people from 52 to 80 years of age performed together at a picnic in Gardens by the Bay.
5. 10 August 2024: Largest Singapore map made of bowls of tangyuan
The Chin Swee-Hong Lim RN had its National Day celebration at Hong Lim Park on 10 August 2024. As part of the festivities, 285 bowls of tangyuan were arranged to form a map of Singapore measuring 1.7m by 2.9m.
6. 31 August 2024: Largest heart formation made of lighted handphones
The annual SingHealth President’s Challenge fundraising for 2024 took place at the Promontory@Marina Bay on 31 August 2024. Themed “SingHealth Lights Up Lives”, the event saw 948 participants standing on the pre-prepared heart outline and lighting up their handphones to form a dazzling heart.
7. 1 September 2024: Largest convoy of motorbikes with national flags
Riders Aid Singapore organised a National Day & Racial Harmony Charity Ride from Tampines Heavy Vehicle Carpark to Loyang Tua Pek Kong on 1 September 2024.
The best part? All 402 motorbikes in the convoy had a small Singapore flag attached during the ride.
8. 1 October 2024: Most number of people doing Salt Taste Test together
To celebrate National Heart Week and World Heart Day, Singapore Heart Foundation and ITE College West jointly conducted the largest-ever salt taste threshold test on the ITE campus to raise awareness about the importance of consuming less sodium.
Participants had to taste 7 strips of paper containing increasing concentrations of salt, from 0 to 1.6 mg per square cm.
Among the 980 staff and students, about 35% of them had salt taste thresholds of 1 mg/sq cm and above, which are the fourth- to seventh-highest concentration levels.
9. 17 to 24 November 2024: Longest mass continuous stairs climb
To commemorate the founding of the first YMCA in London 180 years ago (at the time of the record feat), YMCA of Singapore organised 180 hours of climbing up the YMCA building’s 9-storey staircase.
It went on non-stop from 5am on 17 Nov and ended on 5pm, 24 Nov 2024 with a carnival, the day marking the 40th anniversary of the YMCA building. A total of 3,428 laps were completed by 504 staff, supporters and members of the public in the 7.5 days.
10. 13 April 2025: Largest mass plogging
On 13 April 2025, 826 people turned up for the The Great Sentosa Plog to participate in the island’s greatest clean-up. Participants gathered at Wings of Time and were assigned to clean up one of the 7 routes spread throughout Sentosa.
Why “plogging”, you ask? It’s a portmanteau of “picking litter” and “jogging” (or walking), making for a catchy name.
Culture and heritage
11. World’s smallest domestic cat
The Singapura Cat, native to Singapore, is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s smallest breed of domestic cats. It’s also known locally as Kucinta - a portmanteau of the Malay words “kucing” (cat) and “cinta” (love).
12. World’s most poisonous crab
The colourful mosaic crab (Lophozozymus pictor), which is found in Singapore waters, is the world’s most poisonous crab. Its shell contains saxitoxin, and is 1,000 times more deadly than cyanide. If consumed, it causes paralysis and death, even if it’s been cooked.
13. 2 June 2013: Largest feet washing ceremony
On 2 June 2013, Blossom World Society organised a Parents’ Day at Marina Barrage. A thousand people turned up for this event, which aimed to revisit the concept of filial piety and honouring one’s parents.
Aside from kneeling and serving cups of tea to their parents, 330 participants later washed their parents’ feet in basins of water.
14. 9 August 2014: Largest national flag formed by angkukuehs
Using 2,300 red and white ang ku kuehs, members of Changi Simei CC's Youth Executive Committee (YEC) created a tasty Singapore flag measuring 2.7m by 3.3m.
Arranging the sticky kuehs was no mean feat, as the volunteers had to remove the banana leaves under each kueh before adding them to the flag formation.
15. 22 August 2014: Largest lantern procession on ice
The now-defunct Rink at JCube held its first lantern festival on 22 August 2014. 119 skaters were given paper lanterns for the event. At 10 pm, they lined up to be counted and then started zipping about the rink. Talk about a speedy lantern procession!
16. 17 February 2024: Longest duilian
Duilian is a Chinese poetic couplet where the two lines have corresponding characters having related meanings. Singapore’s longest duilian, measuring 2.2m by 21.5m (more than 8 floors), was unveiled at Lengkok Bahru Block 55 at the CNY lunch celebration organised by Tanjong Pagar GRC and Radin Mas SMC on 17 Feb 2024.
17. 7 September 2024: Largest gathering of people dressed as Chang’e
In Chinese folklore, Chang’e is the mythical woman who flew to and lives on the moon. For Canberra CC’s Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations on 7 September 2024, 113 ladies dressed up as Chang’e with the help of traditional Chinese costumes.
18. 9 November 2024: Largest rangoli made of bottle caps
For over a year, Kampong Chai Chee residents collected bottle caps on behalf of Kampong Chai Chee CC. At the Deepavali celebration organised by the CC’s IAEC at Heartbeat@Bedok, a rangoli measuring 6.3m by 4.1m was made using these caps.
19. 14 December 2024: Largest word formation made of popiah
To celebrate the Katong-Joo Chiat area’s food heritage, the words “Katong-Joo Chiat Heritage” were created using a variety of popiah donated by the community’s residents as well as various F&B outlets on 14 December 2024. The final word formation measured 14.1m by 0.76m, and was assembled at Haig Girls’ School.
20. 10 to 11 January 2025: Longest Vishnu Sahasranamam chanting
Devotees at Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple observed the Vaikunda Ekadasi festival, with 24 hours of group chanting ending at 9am on 11 Jan 2025.
In the Vishnu Sahasranamam chant, an average of 30 participants recited the 1,008 names of Sri Maha Vishnu in Sanskrit, some from memory and others from books and handphones.
21. 9 February 2025: Most number of people doing Chinese calligraphy on paper fans together
Customers of the columbarium Nirvana Memorial Garden were invited to celebrate Chinese New Year onsite on 9 February 2025. A total of 208 people were provided with paper fans and brushes, which they wrote auspicious Chinese words on.
22. 4 April 2025: Largest display of Monkey King figurines
Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is the main character of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. He acquired 72 transformations, which gave him 72 unique powers.
To represent this, Bao De Gong Temple has 72 figurines of Sun Wukong custom-made in China, each of which represents one of the 72 transformations.
23. 11 April 2025: Largest logo made of hongbao origami hearts
Residents of Kolam Ayer were encouraged to keep and upcycle the hongbaos they received during Chinese New Year. Through online videos and workshops, they were taught how to turn these hongbaos into origami hearts.
A wood-and-acrylic case measuring 1.2m in diameter and depicting the SG60 logo was made to hold the hongbaos, and became completely filled up on 11 April 2025.
24. 12 April 2025: Largest collage made of kachang puteh cones
Tampines East Community Club’s (CC) Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC) organised the Puthandu (Tamil New Year) celebrations on 12 April 2025. As part of the festivities, residents rolled and stuck traditional kachang puteh cones to form a 1.6m square SG60 collage.
25. 16 April 2025: Most handmade ketupats made from recycled materials
For weeks, Ang Mo Kio Secondary School’s students cut used magazines, cards, hongbaos and other recycled materials, crafting them into ketupat shapes. 1,060 ketupats were made, tied in bundles and hung around the school hall for the school’s Hari Raya concert on 16 April 2025.
Games and activities
26. 25 August 2012: Longest Plate Spinning Rally
Grace Orchard School provides special education to those with mild intellectual disability or autism. To celebrate the school’s 10th anniversary on 25 August 2012, a plate spinning rally was held, where students would spin a plastic plate at the end of a wooden stick.
A dozen boys from Raffles Institution helped with organising the rally, as well as training participants in the skill at the school hall. There was always at least one plate spinning throughout the rally, which lasted four hours.
27. 30 September 2022: Fastest passing of hula hoops through a 200-people chain
As part of Tanjong Katon Secondary School’s graduation event, its Secondary Four students gathered in the sports hall on 30 September 2022. Holding hands to form a chain, they managed to pass 50 hula hoops from end to end without breaking the chain within 30 minutes.
28. 22 September 2023: Largest game of Centipede Skis
Tanjong Katong Secondary School has a tradition of letting their Secondary Four students have some fun on their last day of the term before the exam season. On 22 September 2023, each class formed into groups of 4 and raced down 20m with their left legs on one ski and their right legs on another.
The wooden skis were made by the school’s D&T department, and a total of 227 students participated.
29. 3 May 2024: Largest relay run with sandbags
To mark its 59th anniversary, the 2nd People’s Defence Force had its staff to run multiple laps of 50m with 15-kg sandbags. The women were given the option to use the 10-kg sandbags if they wished.
In less than 13 minutes, a total consolidated distance of 59 km was completed by the 245 personnel at Clementi Camp.
30. 11 May 2024: Largest mass Bollybeats workout
Dancing to the tunes of Bollywood and Bhangra hits, 254 fitness enthusiasts worked on the field of Our Tampines Hub on 11 May 2024. The event was jointly organised by Tampines West CSN, Bollybeats Fitness SG, and Our Tampines Hub, lasting for 90 minutes and led by a dozen instructors.
31. 11 May 2024: Largest group to walk a half marathon barefooted
On 11 May 2024, Just Walk Lah, a local brisk walking and race walking group, organised an event where 13 people took part in a 21.1-km barefooted walk, making laps around he National Stadium’s 100Plus Promenade.
Each lap was 888m, and the distance covered by the participants was tracked by their phone apps or GPS trackers.
32. 17 May 2024: Most number of people doing a squat wave
On 17 May 2024, Geylang Methodist School (Secondary) had its sports day at Bedok Stadium. To mark the school’s 100th anniversary, it broke the squat wave record with 1,008 people, where participants would stand up when a flag passed by and then return to a squatting position.
33. 1 June 2024: Youngest person to cycle round Singapore
Ryan Soon Hao Ran, at 6 years 7 months, broke the round Singapore cycling record, becoming the youngest person to complete the distance of 128.9 km together with his parents, Benjamin and Valarie. It took them 13 hr 36 min to achieve the feat on a rainy 1 June 2024.
An avid cyclist, Ryan started cycling at 2 years old with a balance bike and upgraded to a 16-inch bicycle without training wheels at 4 years old.
34. 15 June 2024: Most number of people doing bungee jumps in a day
Singapore Hospice Council organised bungee jumps on 15 June 2024 at Skypark Sentosa by AJ Hackett to raise funds for the charity. By taking leaps of faith, 90 participants showed their support for the palliative care community and the wish for everyone to have a dignified end-of-life care.
35. 20 September 2024: Largest ping pong ball bouncing relay
In the annual tradition of having its graduating batch do a final group activity together, Tanjong Katong Secondary School had 230 Secondary 4 students bounce ping pong balls while walking from one end of a 30m line to the other end.
36. 3 October 2024: Largest group doing cup stacking blindfolded
For Children’s Day 2023, Meridian Primary School decided to place a special focus on visual impairment awareness and empowerment.
For weeks, its students practised cup stacking during recess. On 3 October 2024, 831 Primary 1 to 6 pupils and parent volunteers did cup stacking together while wearing blindfolds.
37. 19 October 2024: Largest footstep
Singapore National Stroke Association organised the Stepping Out for Stroke Walkathon on 19 Oct 2024 at Marina Barrage, with stroke survivors, caregivers and supporters walking together.
As part of the walkathon, participants were invited to compete in the ‘Biggest Step’ challenge. The winner? Nicole Faith Yang, who was able to stretch a whopping 150 cm in a single step.
38. 16 November 2024: Largest group to succeed in blindfolded archery
13 young archers from Guru Siththam Perunkudil each succeeded in hitting targets while blindfolded with at least one out of the six arrows they were given.
All of them made successful shots from 10m away, and one of the archers managed a successful shot from a distance of 18m.
39. 16 to 24 November 2024: Longest distance walked while water fasting
Inspired by his father’s battle with cancer, 50-year-old Dr Herman Teo walked 412.41 km from Combat Base, Kuala Lumpur to SingPost Centre in Singapore to raise funds for cancer patients.
Titled “Walk for Papa”, his 9-day journey began on 16 November 2024 and ended on 24 November 2024, with him subsisting on nothing but water the entire time.
40. 29 November 2024: Largest 100-kg tyre flip relay in one hour
Over 4,000 soldiers participated in SAF’s Soldier Strong Challenge at the Singapore Expo on 29 November 2024, with 26 teams representing various units competing against one another in a friendly competition of fitness and endurance.
After the competition was over, the soldiers flipped 100-kg tyres over the course of an hour, achieving a cumulative distance of 160 km.
41. 22 Jan 2025: Most number of people running together in groups of four
To promote fitness and camaraderie among their new students, ITE College West organised an event where groups of four students ran together while connected to each other with stretchable phone cord wrist ties.
288 people successfully completed the 800m route without separating from their teammates.
Random and quirky
42. 3 July 2006: World’s biggest chocolate bar
A gargantuan Kit Kat Chunky bar made by Nestlé Singapore was displayed at Plaza Singapura on 3 July 2006. Weighing a whopping 2.668 tonnes, it measured 3.02m by 1.06m by 0.725m. This record has since been broken.
43. 3 March 2007: World’s most number of people shaving simultaneously
To celebrate the launch of the then-new five-blade Gillette Fusion on 3 March 2007, a mass shaving event was held at Suntec City. 1,580 people were registered and shaved together at the Fountain of Wealth using new shavers and shaving cream provided by Gillette.
44. 1 March 2014: Largest gathering of golden retrievers
The Golden Retriever Club of Singapore managed to gather 102 golden retrievers and their owners for the first-ever Singapore record of gatherings of a single dog breed.
Held at Pet Expo on 1 March 2014 at the Singapore Expo, the club’s Golden Retriever ambassador Amber also made an appearance.
45. 11 June 2015: Most number of people playing duck whistles together
At the 28th SEA Games, 628 kindergarten children and staff from various Star Learners Childcare Centres turned up with duck whistles to cheer on our local team in the Singapore vs Malaysia water polo match. Their support certainly helped, as Singapore won the match 19 to 4.
46. 9 August 2015: Longest lady’s finger
Pasir Ris HDB resident Iris Tam began growing lady’s finger plants after attending a Gardeners’ Day Out event at HortPark on 4 April 2015. On 9 August 2015, she was surprised to discover that one of its fruits had grown to a record length of 33 cm long.
47. 28 July 2018: Largest gathering of most dog breeds
The Watten Neighbourhood Committee invited residents with 53 different breeds of dogs to attend a mass gathering at Bougainvillea Park on 28 July 2018. This paw-some achievement was undertaken to celebrate both Singapore's 53rd birthday as well as the Year of the Dog.
48. 6 July 2023: Most number of people doodling at the same time
On 6 July 2023, Rivervale Primary School celebrated its 25th anniversary with the timeless tradition of doodling. 1,425 students, staff and PSG members present on that day were given cards with random blobs of colours to doodle on. The result? A varied and colourful display of creativity.
49. 15 July 2023: Most paw prints by Singapore Specials
With the support of NParks, Hope For Animals and Singapore Specials Club jointly organised a day of fun and activities for dog-lovers and their pets att Parkland Green on 15 July 2023.
One highlight of the event saw dogs colouring their paws and making prints on canvases and pieces of papers. The canvases were given to the owners as keepsakes, but the 181 papers stamped with paw prints were displayed on a backdrop.
50. 10 September 2023: Largest display of pet lick art
Over 2 weekends, The Star Vista ran an interesting pet-related exhibition named 'A Space Pawdyssey'. One of the highlights of the event was the creation of pet lick art.
What's pet lick art, you ask? Simply put, treats were placed on ziplock bags containing canvases drizzled with globs of paint. When the furry artists licked off the treats, they would spread the paint in the canvas, creating unique works of art.
A total of 176 masterpieces were displayed on the last day of the exhibition (10 September 2023).
51. 2 December 2023: Most number of people unboxing blind boxes together
Organised by CapitaLand at Funan in partnership with art toy brand Pop Mart, 165 lucky fans of the Pop Mart community set a record at the inaugural unboxing bash on 2 December 2023, where each was given a blind box to open.
Online registration for the event was open for a week, and over 6 times more people than the event could accommodate were interested in taking part.
52. 8 March 2024: Youngest to recite all MRT & LRT station names
On 8 March 2024, twins Mohammed Muhafiz and Mohammed Muhaymin were tested separately in naming all the 208 MRT and LRT stations. They had to name them line by line and even stating the station codes, and both got all the stations correct. At the time, they were 4 years 7 months old.
The previous record holder was 5 years 5 months old and only had to name 170 stations, as there were less stations in operation then.
53. 13 June 2024: Largest mass walk in a bomb suit
36th Battalion Singapore Combat Engineers (36 SCE) celebrated its 55th anniversary with a monumental walk with 55 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Engineers walking a kilometre in Nee Soon Camp together on 13 June 2024. Each bomb suit weighs about 34 kg and is equipped with a ventilator.
54. August 2024: Most 100m laps backwards on Personal Mobility Aids
Kampung Senang Charity and EcoCollege organised a day out for users of Personal Mobility Aids (PMAs). As part of the day’s activities, 28 PMA users took part in maneuvering their PMAs backwards on a 100m circuit, achieving 200 laps in about 40 mins.
55. 17 September 2024: Largest medley of electric guitar music
A 25-min electric guitar medley was launched on Youtube on 17 Sep 2024. It featured 70 guitarists, who each contributed a 20-second solo done at Exuism Record studio or from their own premises from June to August 2024.
The guitarists ranged from 70-year-old Rosli Mohalim of Sweet Charity, to 16-year-old Aydrean, who played with his father Bo Skullbanger of metal band Chugga Ritual.
56. 21 September 2024: Largest pets ball pit
On 6 to 8, 13 to 14 and 20 to 22 September 2024, Pets Social Ground at The Star Vista set up Singapore’s largest pet ball pit - a 3m by 7.9m ‘pool’ that both pets and owners alike could dive into for fun.
57. 13 October 2024: Fastest to open a Pokemon trading card pack
Thousands of collectible card enthusiasts gathered at Marina Square from 11 to 13 October 2024 for the first-ever edition of Cards Collectibles Asia, organised by TMMC Organisation. Heats were held every day for the fastest individual to open a Pokemon TCG booster pack.
7 entrants advanced to the finals on the last day, and the winner was Ng Hao Yang with a time of 1.077 sec on his second attempt.
58. 21 November 2024: Largest Monopoly board game
In collaboration with social service agency Blue Cross Charitable Institution, Singapore Prison Service helped its young inmates to custom-make a giant Monopoly board game measuring 3.6m by 3.6m. This included larger-than-life game components like hotels, houses, dice and tokens.
59. 6 December 2024: Largest moving ferris wheel on a Christmas tree
The Star Vista featured a London theme for its Christmas decorations in 2024. On the 20m-tall Christmas tree, it displayed replicas of Big Ben and the London Eye. The London Eye replica was an actual revolving ferris wheel, with a diameter of 3.7m and 5.1m tall.
The area around the tree also displayed iconic representations of London, such as the London bus, telephone booth, and pillar box.
60. 21 January 2025: Largest 3D-printed model made from recycled plastic bottles
To celebrate Lunar New Year, Yeo’s teamed up with Unigons and PlasticsTinkers to create Singapore’s largest 3D-printed Fortune Cat using 100 percent recycled Yeo’s plastic bottles. The 1.2m-by-0.8m model was displayed at FairPrice Hougang Mall on 21 Jan 2025, reflecting Yeo’s efforts to go green.
