A Day To Promote Understanding Of The Disabled
Everyone knows that December is the month of Christmas, but did you know that it plays host to a universal observance day as well? Since 1992, 3 December has been designated International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), which aims to promote greater understanding of persons with disabilities and the challenges they face.
As part of its efforts to build an inclusive society, Singapore is home to various organisations that empower persons with disabilities and help them more smoothly integrate into the community, such as Disabled People's Association, Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore, SPD (formerly known as Society for the Physically Disabled), Handicaps Welfare Association and Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore, which provides equine-assisted therapy to persons with disabilities.
Curious to know more? There are also events to raise awareness about persons with disabilities, such as the annual Purple Parade, which celebrates the talents of persons with special needs while encouraging solidarity in support of creating an inclusive society for all.
