With Cinemas In Singapore Shutting Down, These Films Make The Big Screen Experience Count

With cinemas rapidly closing around us, you’d think that now wouldn’t be a great time to be a movie buff in Singapore. But as a self-professed cinephile, I’d say this year’s lineup is shaping up nicely - there’s plenty still worth watching in theatres. Whether you’re a fan of superheroes, heart-pumping action, or spine-chilling horror, the slate of films promises to offer something for everyone. Here are the movies that I’m most hyped about, complete with my very Singaporean take on what makes them worth the watch.

Captain America: Brave New World

Plot: A politically charged superhero tale where Sam Wilson, a.k.a the new Captain America must navigate global tensions while wielding the iconic shield.

Release date: 14 Feb, 2025

Hype level: ★★★★☆

Marvel has had its ups and downs recently. I still remember taking a half-day from work (sorry boss) to catch the first screening of Avengers: Endgame on opening day back in 2019. Back then, every MCU movie felt like a happening here in Singapore. Since then, the onslaught of superhero projects to this the big screens (and streaming) has led to considerable fatigue, but the prospect of Sam Wilson donning the shield as Captain America is enough to reignite my excitement.

With political intrigue and intense action sequences teased in the trailers (plus the addition of Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, to the cast), this film could be the redemption arc the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) desperately needs (and perfect timing given it’s election year in 2025). Will it surpass the magic of Deadpool and Wolverine’s chaotic energy? Can the franchise survive its Chris Evans-shaped hole? Well, I’m ready with popcorn in hand to find out.

Superman

Plot: A heartfelt reboot of the Man of Steel that promises hope, optimism, and a fresh start for the DC Universe.

Release date: 10 Jul, 2025

Hype level: ★★★★★

Speaking of comic book franchises, the DC Universe is rebooting as well, with a brand new Superman leading the way. The problem is, I’m still not over the old Superman. Henry Cavill was literally perfect for the role. And bro, definitely didn’t deserve the treatment that he got.

But the ‘S’ on Superman’s chest stands for ‘hope’. Directed by James Gunn, this new iteration at least promises a return to Superman’s roots—a beacon of hope and optimism. And in our current troubled word, we could definitely use a Superman movie to inspire good. I’m also curious to see how Gunn’s take will balance modern sensibilities with old-school charm. Let’s hope the movie flies high and doesn’t land in any Kryptonite-like pitfalls.

Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning

Plot: Tom Cruise returns for one final, high-stakes mission that pushes the limits of action cinema.

Release date: 22 May, 2025

Hype level: ★★★★★

Tom Cruise may be pushing 60, but he’s still pulling off stunts that would give our NSFs a heart attack. With all the running that he does, I’m pretty sure the Hollywood legend can still ace his IPPT 2.4km run, no problem!

The Mission: Impossible series has consistently delivered high-octane action, and Final Reckoning is set to be the grand finale. How exactly is going to top scaling the Burj Khalifa, hanging of the side of a flying airplane, and riding a motorcycle off the side of a mountain, you ask? Well, he’s Tom Cruise, that’s why! I’m fully expecting the action star to raise the stakes with even more insane stunts and death-defying feats. Bring on the adrenaline rush!

28 Years Later

Plot: The long-awaited sequel explores the chilling aftermath of a decades-long zombie apocalypse.

Release date: 19 Jun, 2025

Hype level: ★★★★☆

Before there was Train To Busan, The Walking Dead and Resident Evil, 28 Days Later was the OG modern zombie flick. More than 2 decades later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later is finally here.

Directed by Danny Boyle, this movie dives into the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse that has spanned decades. Unfortunately, Oppenheimer actor Cillian Murphy is not returning to the franchise that made him a breakout star. But in his place, we have the equally charismatic Aaron-Taylor Johnson as the leading man.

It’s only been a few years since the COVID-19 pandemic but this movie might conjure up scenes of empty streets from that dark period. This one’s perfect for a late-night screening with friends. Just remember not to take the last MRT home; the vibes will be too creepy.

F1

Plot: A high-octane drama set in the world of Formula 1, featuring Brad Pitt and authentic racing thrills.

Release date: 26 Jun, 2025

Hype level: ★★★★☆

Singaporeans go F1-crazy everytime September rolls around, thanks to the annual. Singapore Grand Prix. This year, you can add this upcoming Brad Pitt vehicle to the hype. The glamour of Formula 1 and the smouldering charisma of a Hollywood legend—what’s not to love? This racing drama, produced in collaboration with actual F1 teams, promises an authentic behind-the-scenes look at the high-stakes world of motorsport. Releasing close to Singapore’s own Grand Prix season, it’s practically a companion piece to our favourite night race. Rev your engines and get ready to be thrilled.

Ballerina

Plot: The John Wick universe expands with a deadly and elegant tale of revenge.

Release date: 5 Jun, 2025

Hype level: ★★★★☆

Set in the John Wick universe, Ballerina follows the journey of a female assassin played by Ana de Armas. With Keanu Reeves making a cameo, fans can expect the same stylish action choreography that made the franchise a global phenomenon.

This spin-off feels like a fresh twist on the genre, and as Singaporeans who appreciate a good revenge story (hello, K-drama fans), we’re all in.

Michael

Plot: A deeply emotional biopic about the life, music, and legacy of Michael Jackson.

Release date: 3 Oct, 2025* (USA)

Hype level: ★★★★★

The King of Pop’s life story is coming to the big screen, and it’s bound to hit all the right notes. From his meteoric rise to his deeply personal struggles, Michael promises to be an emotional rollercoaster for fans.

So far there’s no official trailer or even a first look image of Jaafar Jackson as the titular legend, but Singaporeans who grew up moonwalking to MJ’s tunes will appreciate this heartfelt tribute. Expect a stellar soundtrack and powerful performances that celebrate his legacy. If recent musical biopics such as Robbie William’s Better Man or Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is anything to go by, this is sure to be a Thriller!

Death Whisperer 3

Plot: The latest instalment in the Thai horror franchise that continues to deliver supernatural thrills.

Release date: 8 Oct, 2025* (Thailand)

Hype level: ★★★★★

When it comes to my Asian movie pick, look no further that this horror franchise from Thailand. Coincidentally, I first stumbled upon the Death Whisperer series on Netflix when I was in holiday in Bangkok.

I was so hooked by the first movie’s eerie atmosphere and gripping storyline that I watched the second instalment the very next day, which happened to be showing at one of their IMAX cinemas that week. Suffice to say, it was frightening—especially knowing how well Thai filmmakers do horror (I still can’t get over Shutter!). Death Whisperer 3 promises to up the ante with more spine-chilling scares and creepy urban legends that resonate with Singaporean audiences.
