Beating the Sunday Blues: A Guide To Starting The Week Right

Ah, Sunday. A day of rest and relaxation, until the dread of Monday starts creeping in. You’re having prata with friends at your favourite supper joint, relishing the last few hours of freedom, when it hits you – the Sunday Blues. Here are some ways to banish that sian feeling, and start your week with a spring in your step.

1. Embrace the huat of Sunday

Sunday is still a precious day off, so make the most of it. Whether it’s having a leisurely breakfast with prawn mee and appam, or taking a stroll through one of Singapore’s many parks and gardens, focus on activities that make you happy. Channel the huat vibes and treat Sunday as the grand finale of your weekend, not the prelude to a work week.

2. Plan something to look forward to

One way to chase away the blues is to have something exciting on the horizon. Plan a fun activity for Monday evening. It could be a dinner date at a new restaurant, catching a movie, or even a chill session with friends at your favourite bar. Knowing there’s something enjoyable waiting for you after work can make Monday seem less daunting.

3. Master the art of the Sunday night ritual

Create a Sunday night ritual that helps you unwind and transition smoothly into the week ahead. This could be anything from a pampering skincare routine to a cosy reading session. Light some scented candles, put on your comfiest pyjamas, and sip on a soothing cup of chamomile tea. By making Sunday nights special, you’ll begin to associate them with relaxation rather than dread.

4. Get organised (but not too much)

A little preparation can go a long way in easing the Sunday blues. Spend a bit of time on Sunday evening organising your work bag, planning your outfit, and jotting down a to-do list for Monday. But remember, the key is not to get overwhelmed. The goal is to feel prepared, not stressed. Think of it as setting yourself up for success rather than diving headfirst into work mode.

5. Exercise your way to happiness

It’s no secret that exercise boosts endorphins, those magical chemicals that make us feel happy. So, why not incorporate a bit of physical activity into your Sunday routine? It doesn’t have to be anything intense – a leisurely jog around the neighbourhood, a relaxing yoga session, or even a fun game of badminton with friends can do the trick. Plus, it’ll help you sleep better, making Monday morning a tad less painful.

6. Eat your way to happiness

Food is love, food is life. End your weekend on a high note with a delicious meal. Whether it’s a hearty home-cooked dinner or your favourite hawker fare, indulging in a tasty treat can lift your spirits. If you’re a fan of cooking, try out a new recipe and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Remember, a happy tummy equals a happy you.

7. Limit screen time before bed

We all love a good Netflix binge, but spending too much time in front of screens can mess with your sleep. Try to unplug an hour before bed and engage in activities that help you wind down. Read a book, listen to calming music, or practice some gentle stretches. This will help you relax and prepare for a good night’s sleep, making Monday morning more bearable.
